One year ago today, Villainesse was born.
It simultaneously seems like just yesterday and about a decade since she sprang into being, and I’m sitting here writing this with a sense of amazement that we made it through a whole year, pride in what we’ve achieved and a deep, pressing need to sleep for about a week.
Over the past year, close to 50 writers have joined our ranks, boldly sharing their opinions and their talents. They have formed an incredible community. Their insights and bravery blow me away regularly.
Many, many thousands of readers have also joined our girl power party. It has been a privilege to bring no filter, no bullshit media to our fierce audience. Long may it continue.
Over the last year we’ve launched a little campaign called #MyBodyMyTerms, tackled subjects like abortion, rape culture, sexual harassment and racism, and we’re only just getting started.
While this anniversary is a time for reflection and celebration, it’s also a time to look forward. And we want to hear from you! What do you want to see from Villainesse? How can we be better? Click ‘write’ above and let us know.
Tonight Jo and I head to the Canon Media Awards as finalists for the Best Blog Award and I feel like just being there is a win in itself. To be named alongside the other finalists is an incredible honour, one that I would never in my wildest dreams have anticipated.
So today, on Villainesse’s birthday, I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the site. I’d suggest we all get together for cake, but time, space and numbers would make that impossible. But if the opportunity arises to eat cake today, I fully encourage it. Have an extra large bite for us.
Happy birthday, Villainesse. Here’s to the next year!
